Acid is added to irrigation water to reduce the level of alkalinity in the water. The alkalinity level of your water ( not the pH of your water ) will have a direct impact on the pH of your soil media. The best way to think about alkalinity in the water is that it is like lime in the field.

The more lime you apply in the field, the higher the soil pH becomes. The higher the alkalinity level of your water, the more rapidly the pH of your soil mix rises. When the soil mix pH gets above 6.5, the uptake of most minor elements is reduced. This will result in micro nutrient deficiencies. So, it is important to keep the alkalinity level of your water between 60-80 ppm of alkalinity.

The Acid Calculator will calculate for you the amount of acid to add to your water per 100 gallons of water to neutralize enough alkalinity to leave your water with 80 ppm of alkalinity. Simply fill out the form and insert the level of alkalinity that your water contains. The calculator will then calculate how much acid you need to add per 100 gallons of water in your float bed to neutralize the alkalinity down to 80 ppm.

The NCDA lab gives recommendations of neutralizing 80% of all alkalinity. We do not believe that a one size fits all is appropriate for your fertility program. Alkalinity is not a bad thing, just the excess of alkalinity above 100 ppm. Transplant Systems recommends that you maintain a level of 60-80 ppm of alkalinity. Neutralizing 80% of all alkalinty can reduce moderate levels below the recommended range of 60- 80 ppm. The Acid Calculator maintains 80 PPM level.

You may then want to use the Water Volume calculator to determine exactly how much water you have added back to your water bed. Take the figure you get and divide by 100 and then add multiply this figure by the answer you get from the Acid Calculator. You now have the total amount of acid to add to your water bed.

The only information that the calculator needs is the alkalinity level of your water. You will need to do your own alkalinity test, or send a water sample to a testing lab. However, we highly suggest that you take your own alkalinity reading with a simple tester. After all that’s the purpose of this calculator, to give you the amount of acid that you need as you add water back to your water beds, without having to wait for a lab report. This calculator gives you that information now.

While there are different units of measure we recommend that you use a tester that reads alkalinity in ppm CaCO3.

This calculator automatically inputs a desired alkalinity level of 80 ppm. This is the level that Transplant Systems recommends for growing tobacco plants.

While there are 3 different mineral acids that you can use, this calculator assumes that you will be using 35% sulfuric acid (common battery acid)

Notes on the Use of Acid to Modify Water Bed Alkalinity

All acids pose a health threat if they come in contact with skin.

Use caution when working with acids. Always wear proper face, hand, and body protection.

If you are applying acid with an injector, it should NOT be added to the fertilizer concentrate.

Retest your float bed water after adding acid to confirm the adjusted alkalinity values.
